The tables above show changes in the total population of five different cities in the United States from 1800 to 2000.
New York underwent a significant increase in population over centuries. In 1800, 79,216 people were recorded, while in 1900 the population increased fivefold to 3,437,202. Furthermore, one hundred years later in 2000, the number tripled to 8,009,185, making New York the most populated city of all.
Moreover, the second table comprises Manhattan and other districts (four districts combined, namely Brooklyn, Bronx, Queens, and Staten Island). Manhattan had 60,515 residents registered in 1800, contributing 76% of the total population in the table. In 1900, the number grew largely to 1,860,093, accounting 54% of the total population. However, the number of Manhattan’s population decreased in 2000 to 1,538,096, managing only 19% of the total population.
For other districts, the number of population in 1800 was only 18,701, the smallest among all. Besides, a massive surge happened in 1900, reaching 1,587,109, followed by another spike in 2000 at 6,471,089.
