Many IELTS Reading candidates run out of time not because they do not understand English, but because they read in the wrong order. The two-pass method is a practical strategy for candidates who often panic in Passage 3.
Pass 1 is about collecting easy marks quickly. Start each passage by scanning the questions first, not reading the full text. Identify question types and locate keywords.
Then scan the passage to find answers that are clearly visible, such as names, dates, headings, and numbers. Do not get stuck on difficult questions. If you cannot find an answer in about one minute, skip it and move on.
Pass 2 is the deep work. After you secure easier questions, you return to the difficult ones. Now you have more time and less pressure because you already gained marks. During this pass, you read more carefully in the relevant section only, not the whole passage.
This method works because IELTS Reading rewards speed and accuracy together. If you spend too long on one tricky True/False/Not Given question, you may lose four easier marks later.
To use this strategy effectively, you need discipline. Candidates often say they will “skip,” but they do not. They keep fighting with one question. Train yourself in IELTS Reading mock tests with a strict rule: skip without guilt. Mark it, move on, return later.
Also, keep a rough time plan: about 17 minutes per passage.
If you are behind, the two-pass method helps you recover.
The two-pass method does not replace language ability. It protects your score under pressure. In the real test, that protection matters more than perfection.
